WHO, the global health regulator cleared the CanSino Biologics vaccine by providing Emergency Use Authorization. It is the 11th such vaccine produced by China to have gained the green light with the UN stating that they found the single jab vaccine to be 92% effective against the infection with a 64% reduction in risk of developing infection symptoms. WHO experts have recommended the use of the vaccine in adults aged 18 and above. 

The vaccine uses an adenovirus, a harmless virus that delivers the spike protein of the coronavirus in the body, hence, stimulating an immune response similar to the vaccine produced by Johnson and Johnson, and AstraZeneca. 

The authorization of CanSino represents an opportunity for poor countries to purchase and deliver vaccines made by the Chinese company rather than UN-backed COVAX. As many countries depend on COVAX for their immunization programme with a selection bias toward the mRNA vaccine produced by Moderna and Pfizer.
